Guided Walking Tour of Historic Oakland Cemetery Join us in Atlanta's Historic Oakland Cemetery for a walking tour of this
spectacular cornerstone of American history. Get up close and personal with
Atlantašs oldest landmark, rich with history, astounding typography, dead
celebrities, and iconic symbolism, guided by local historians.
Built in 1850, Atlanta's Historic Oakland Cemetery is an outstanding example
of a Victorian garden cemetery...it is also a magnificent sculpture garden,
botanical garden, flourishing wildlife habitat, public park and repository
of Victorian typographic artistry created with little more than a wooden
mallet and an iron chisel. Important Atlanta milestones are represented,
from early builders, to Civil War soldiers, to leaders of industry, to Civil
Rights pioneers. Oakland Cemetery is also poetry, art, architecture, nature
and personal stories of 70,000 souls.
After the tour, mingle with fellow designers and the spirits of our creative
forbears at a picnic at the burial site of the Atlanta Typographical Union.
AIGA Atlanta has "adopted" this exquisite burial plot erected in 1914. Our
chapter is responsible for the landscape planning, planting, monument
restoration and upkeep of this historic link to Atlanta's design ancestry.
LUNCH: Lunch will be provided by Daddy D'z BBQ Joint, voted "the Best BBQ in Atlanta." Meal will include Barbequed beef, Corn on the cob, Cole slaw, baked beans and Southern sweet tea. PLEASE NOTE: No meal substitutions available.
If you'd prefer to drive your own vehicle, meet us inside the cemetery gates at the Bell Tower/Gift Shop at 10:00am. Directions and more info about Historic Oakland Cemetery: www.oaklandcemetery.com
